Police blame GNLA

TURA, JULY 14: Meghalaya police blamed the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) for abduction of district sports officer of South Garo Hills K M Sharma. Sharma was abducted on gun point from Kherapara area in West Garo Hills on Friday, while he was on his way back from Baghmara, the district headquarter of South Garo Hills, where he is posted.

“It is GNLA’s handiwork. Villagers from Kherapara have identified Hadeo Momin behind the abduction”, said GHP Raju, Inspector General (law & order, operations).

Hadeo is one of the most wanted GNLA commanders, operating along the Chokpot area of South Garo Hills. Raju reasoned out that the motive behind the abduction is quick money.

The massive operation by the West Garo Hills police team is on to rescue Sharma. The abductors have made a ransom call to Sharma’s wife for his safe release. The Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Shillong has appealed to the abductors to release Sharma unharmed and unconditionally.

GNLA refutes police claim

The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) has claimed that Benjamin Marak, who surrendered before the police in West Garo Hills, is not “political secretary” of the outfit as claimed by the police.

Benjamin surrendered on Sunday at Tura.

In a release on facebook, the outfit said that Benjamin has given a false statement and impression to the police. “He (Benjamin) is not issued with any official stamp or pad of the post. Benjamin is trained and endorsed for the commander of the special erase group”, the statement said.

The outfit said that Benjamin’s role in the outfit was in “hit and run cases”.-By Our Reporter
