SHILLONG, MAY 19: A day after he was put under judicial custody by the Meghalaya high court, former KHADC chief executive member and KHNAM vice president Adelbert Nongrum was released on bail on Tuesday.

Nongrum was sent to judicial custody on contempt charges. After he was released, he went back to continue his ‘indefinite-hunger-strike.’

Nongrum was released after the Meghalaya High Court granted the bail application filed by his wife Pamela Wahlang.

Nongrum was taken into custody during the hearing on contempt case against him yesterday and was produced again today in the court.

Granting the bail, Meghalaya high court chief justice Uma Nath Singh who heads a division bench hearing on the matter said, “We allow the bail application subject to petitioner’s contemnor wife furnishing of a bail bond of Rs 1,00,000/-  (Rupees  One lakh) with two surety bonds of the like amount to the satisfaction of Chief  Judicial  Magistrate, Shillong.”

The Bench also asked Nongrum to furnish an undertaking before the court to that he shall remain present at the court room on subsequent dates of hearing.

Nongrum was dragged to the court after he reportedly made a derogatory and defamatory statement against the court publicly lowering its image.

Nongrum had also challenged the ruling of Justice SR Sen who in his order prohibited the local headmen from issuing NOCs for the purpose of birth/death or for registration of any document as well as for building permission and obtaining loan.

The court had taken cognizance of the statements made by Nongrum recently on May 7, which was reported by the local dailies.

Soon after his released, Nongrum came back to join his co-partner Goldy Warjri to continue with their indefinite hunger strike which entered its fourth day on Tuesday.

Nongrum and Warjri had staged the hunger strike demanding that the government immediately pass the KHAD (Village Administration) Bill, 2014 which seeks to empower the traditional institutions.

“I have not broken my fast when I was taken into custody. I still and will continue this hunger strike protest till demand is achieved,” Nongrum told newsmen.

Nongrum informed that apart from the bail, he had also submitted his written apology to the Court.- By Our Reporter
