SHILLONG, MAY 20: Immediately after being sworn in as the new Meghalaya governor, senior BJP leader and former RSS member V Shanmuganathan said that a governor has lots of things to do and has a role to play to understand people and appreciate their value.

On Wednesday Meghalaya high court chief justice Uma Nath Singh administered the oath of office and secrecy to Shanmuganathan at the century-old Raj Bhavan.

The swearing in ceremony was attended among others by chief minister Mukul Sangma, his cabinet colleagues and top bureaucrats and police officials.

Shanmuganathan became the 20th Governor of this hill state and he replaced West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who has been taken charge since January.

Speaking to newsmen after swearing in ceremony, Shanmuganathan said, “As a Governor, I’ll be working for the complete and total development of Meghalaya.”

Stating that Governor is a constitutional post and he is the constitutional representative, he said, “In that way I want to be friendly with everyone, every person living in Meghalaya.”

Referring to Meghalaya as a beautiful place with good people, the new Governor said, “I want to love the entire Meghalaya, be nearer to people’s heart and I want to see the beauty, the greatness of Meghalaya and its people.”

When asked for his comment to the views that Governor post is just a rubberstamp, he however said, “As far as I am concerned Governor has got lot to play… understanding people and appreciating their values,” adding “So lots of things for the Governor to do.”

Asked on how he feels as a BJP man becoming a Governor of a Congress ruled state, he said, “Governor is a common man. Governor is common to every citizen and don’t belong to any political parties and he wishes the success of every individual.”- By Our Reporter
