Ex-CEM to fight his case

SHILLONG, SEPT 7: Former KHADC chief executive member Adelbert Nongrum on Wednesday sought to defend himself without taking any legal assistance in a case registered against him by the Meghalaya High Court for making derogatory and defamatory statement last year. During a hearing on the case in the Meghalaya High Court, Nongrum has specifically submitted that the counsel would not be representing him anymore.

GS Massar and HS Thangkhiew, Senior Advocates as also P Nongbri, Advocate earlier submitted that the principal contemnor (Nongrum) seeks to conduct the case himself and hence, they seek permission from the Court to withdraw.

In its order, the High Court said, “Accordingly, the counsels are permitted to withdraw from this case.”

“We have enquired from Nongrum if any other legal assistant/lawyer be provided to which, Nongrum has specifically submitted that he would be pleading/defending his case himself and does not require any other legal assistance,” it stated.

Nongrum, also the KHNAM leader was dragged to the court after he reportedly made a derogatory and defamatory statement against the court publicly lowering its image last year.

He had challenged the ruling of Justice SR Sen who in his order prohibited the local headmen from issuing NOCs for the purpose of birth/death or for registration of any document as well as for building permission and obtaining loan.

Meanwhile, also present during the hearing were the five leaders of the HYC against whom notices have been issued and accordingly have filed their affidavits.

These include the HYC general secretary Robert June Kharjahrin, Nickson Dohling, Organizing Secretary; Donboklang Kharlyngdoh, Vice President; Anthony Kharbuli, Adviser; and Issac Basawiamoit, Asst. Organizing Secretary.

Senior counsel VK Jindal appearing for CBI in this matter submitted that in fact he received the corrected copies of the affidavits of these five persons today only and, therefore, would require a 2 few days’ time to respond to the same; and if necessary, he shall be filing affidavit in response also.

“Although no supplementary affidavit has been filed as indicated in the order passed on the last occasion but, at the request of K Paul, it is again provided that if so chosen, the five persons may file their supplementary affidavits before the next date,” the court stated.

Senior Government Advocate ND Chullai submits that though he has received a copy of the affidavits filed by the five persons but he has not received the copies of the affidavits filed by the principal contemnor.

On this the court has directed the Registry to supply a copy of the necessary affidavit/documents to the Senior Government Advocate within 2 days. The next hearing has been fixed on September 15.-By Our Reporter
