SHILLONG, SEPT 7: said the proposed amendment to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016 will be placed in the upcoming assembly session.

“The observations and recommendations of the select committee as to how the Bill will be appropriately amended will be placed before the august house for its consideration,” Sangma told reporters after the meeting.

He said whatever modification required will be based on the exhaustive deliberation of the select committee during the three-time sittings held since August 16.

Stating that the select committee had done justice to its responsibility of examining the bill clause by clause, Sangma said, “We have finalized our recommendations and these will be made known only after placing before the house.”

The Bill is part of the measures taken up by the state government to come up with a comprehensive mechanism to deal with the issue related to influx and illegal immigration entering the state.

Earlier, the state government had referred the Bill to the select committee during the budget session of the Assembly held on March this year following severe criticism against the Bill which is alleged to be totally ‘out of context’ from the objective of having a comprehensive mechanism.

The Bill was also viewed as a legislation which will not only harass the indigenous community and instead facilitates influx and illegal immigration to enter the state.-By Our Reporter
