After primary, secondary schools teachers’ take to the street

Shillong, Aug 31: The ad-hoc secondary school teachers demanded that the state government must come up with a definite statement on their demands on hike of their salaries and up-gradation of schools from ad-hoc to deficit.

Hundreds of school teachers Friday staged a one-day sit-in-protest in front of the AIR Shillong’s office to protest against the government nonchalant attitude towards these two demands.

The government immediately called them for talks, but the teachers under the banner of Federation of All Meghalaya Adhoc Secondary School Teachers Association (FAMASSTA) said they were not satisfied with the government assurance as the officials did not reveal the status of their demands.

Emerging from a meeting with Additional Secretary Planning C Langstieh FAMASSTA president B Kharumnuid said, “We were not satisfied with the steps taken by the government. We were only informed that the matters relating to our demands are being process”,

Kharumnuid informed that the officials failed to divulge the steps being taken on the issue by the government as the officials simply said “it’s too difficult to tell now”.  She said the teachers had been taking these demands since 2006 but the government failed to address it.

Continuing their agitation the teachers will be holding a pen-down strike on September 10, 11 and 12, which will be followed by a “mass casual leave” from September 27 to 28”.- By Our Reporter
