TURA, MAR 3: Newly appointed Meghalaya director general of police Rajiv Mehta said that police would launch an aggressive operation against insurgent outfits of Garo hills and assured that neutralizing militancy situation of Garo hills would be given top most priority by the police.
Mehta told reporters on his maiden visit to Garo hills as Meghalaya DGP, “Our focus will definitely be operation.”
Mehta, who had just taken over as the state DGP, however refused to comment whether militancy is on decline in Garo hills saying that he is of course looking forward to such a scenario.
Mehta, accompanied by IGP GHP Raju is on a two-day familiarization tour to Garo hills. He held a meeting with all the SPs of five districts of Garo hills and West Khasi Hills at 2nd MLP Battalion Goeragre, on the outskirt of Tura.
“We discussed several issues confronting the region to draw up an action plan”, Mehta told media. Speaking about shortage of manpower in police department, he felt rational deployment is the solution. In several police station and outpost of Garo hills, there is an acute shortage of police personnel.
Mehta informed that raising of special force – 10 (SF-10) were discussed, which will aid and support battling against militants of Garo hills. He said, “We are going ahead with SF-10.”
Mehta hoped that community policing would support the operation against militancy and day-to-day crime management. “It is extremely important for better awareness”, he explained.
When asked whether government has such plans, Mehta, however, said, “I am not aware but I am for it”.
On negligible highway patrolling, Mehta agreed that police presence on the road is a must. “Statistics show that it is not high. If the trend continues, we have to take this on a priority. There is a constraint of manpower. However, we have discussed the issue”.
Meanwhile IGP GHP Raju informed that CCTVs would be installed in 10 different strategic locations of Tura in the next few days. “SP will finalize the locations”, he said. Last week, CCTVs were installed in state capital Shillong.
When asked about upgradation of police stations in Meghalaya, Raju said it is under active consideration of ministry of home affairs (MHA). As per the proposed plan, 18 outposts will be upgraded to police station and 16 existing police station will be upgraded to grade A.-From Our Correspondent
