SHILLONG, OCT 26: AICC general secretary in-charge Meghalaya V Narayanasamy today asked the State government to impress upon the Governor V Shanmuganathan to speed up the process of giving assent to the Village Administration Bills  (VAB) passed by KHADC and JHADC.

“We will request the chief minister and the ministers concerned to impress upon the Governor to give assent to the VABs to empower the village headmen and village institutions,” Narayanasamy told reporters after a meeting on Monday.

According to him, their powers cannot be curtailed by an order of the court.

His direction came following the growing demand of the Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) to dismiss the present state government led by the chief minister Mukul Sangma for allegedly having hand in delaying the approval of the VABs.

The traditional village chiefs have also called for a mega procession on October 30 to protest against the Congress government.

Terming the issue related to VAB as burning, the AICC leader, however, said, “This issue can be resolved by negotiation, dialogue and discussion with the village headmen and also ensure the Governor should assent the VAB.”

Informing that a delegation of the village chiefs had also met him yesterday, he said that there is not much difference between the Governor’s views and the views of the village headmen.

“Yesterday the village headmen association met me, they told me that their traditional rights, village headman village administration institutions have been following the custom of administering the village locality by way of election in the village and suddenly because of the court order it has been removed,” he said.

He also informed that subsequently, the village administration bills were passed by the KHADC and JHADC, which was sent to the state government, who also in turn sent to the Governor and the Governor is sitting on the file.

He further reiterated that there is a need to decide on how to go about it and bring to the table the village headmen and try to resolve this issue.-By Our Reporter
