Anti-influx protest intensified

SHILLONG, AUG 25: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has organized series of peaceful agitaitons in the different districts as part of its indefinite protest against the state government’s adamant attitude towards its 14-point of demands which include the ILP system.

Today, the HYC – Nongthymmai Circle hold a signature campaign to garner public support in the city here, while the HYC – Mawkyrwat Circle staged a rally and a sit-in-demonstration in Mawkyrwat, the district headquarter of South West Khasi Hills.

Earlier, the HYC had launched the ‘Save Hynniewtrep Mission’ after the state government refused to entertain its invitation for discussion the points suggested as strong laws to check influx and illegal immigration into the state.

HYC-NC president Tiewsoh Kharjahrin and HYC Shillong City vice president John Lyngdoh were the first to sign on the flex put up near a football ground at Firebrigade. “We choose identity over development, implement ILP in Meghalaya” – was read in one of the placards hung at the venue.

People and passersby were also seen actively participating at the signature campaign, which started from 1pm to 5pm.

Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said, “It seems that the state government is forcing people to take violent path by not paying heed to the demands put forth through peaceful agitations.”

“Therefore, the state government should not blame us if things get worse from now onwards,” he said while adding that the campaign is to send a clear message that the Council will further intensify its agitations till the government is compelled to succumb.

On the other hand, HYC Mawkyrwat Circle president Wallam Nongsiej said that the rally and the sit-in-demonstration is being organized as a mark of protest against the government under the leadership of chief minister Mukul Sangma and also former Dy CM Rowell Lyngdoh.

“We demand that the government should immediately implement the 14-point of demands otherwise they would be compelled to take other course of action for the cause of the indigenous community,” Nongsiej said.

The president also asked Rowell, who is also a sitting legislator from Mawkyrwat constituency, to extend his full support to the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit and other anti-influx laws failing which they would mobilize the public against him.

Yesterday, the activists of the HYC Nongstoin Circle completed their 93km-long-march from Nongstoin to Shillong as a mark of protest against the government’s negligence towards West Khasi Hills District.
