SHILLONG, MAR 11: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma wondered where is the problem with government employees informing the state government of the office they are holding in traditional institution. He said the government has not debarred them from holding such office but only wanted them to inform their department and authority.

There was an increasing demand from the traditional heads for denotifying the notification of the amended Meghalaya Services (Conduct) Rules, which seek to direct government employees to furnish information about their holding of office in traditional body.

Replying to the debate on Governor’s address in the assembly on Friday, Sangma questioned as to who government employees are the purpose of government employees and thundered,  “Are they not being paid from the state exchequer to serve the people.”

Sanma said, “Government employees are for the people so what is the problem in informing the department and authorities that they have been elected to serve the people in that capacity when we are not barring or preventing anybody.”

Sangma pointing out that there was no such problem or protest in Garo hills and some villages in Khasi hills region and said, “Only few are protesting and mobilizing.”

Sangma said, “The amended rules only say that after assuming office or appointed to such office, they should just inform the government but doesn’t want to inform also.”.

Sangma also said, “Don’t we have enough people among our communities who can actually serve our community in different capacities.” He felt that the government’s time is wasted on issues which are not supposed to be an issue at all.-By Our Reporter
