Arson foiled

SHILLONG, JUNE 16: Police foiled an arson attempt by activists of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), which is opposing the railway project, on Thursday night even as a cop was injured in the incident.

The incident took place at around 8.40 pm last night, when a group of five KSU members were intercepted by Special Operations Team (SOT) personnel on patrol duty at Golflink, Lailad.

SP (City) Vivek Syiem said on trying to flee, a scuffle ensued where one SOT personnel was injured by a deep cut and was shifted to Civil Hospital.

However, while others managed to flee, one KSU member identified as Samuel L Nongpiur (23) of Mawlai Mawroh was apprehended, he said.

A plastic jar containing 2 liters of Petrol and 4 Maruti rubber tyres were found and seized, the SP said while adding the arson attempt was accordingly foiled.

A case was registered and investigation is on to nab the rest of the culprits, he added.
