Addressing newsmen here on Friday, NCP national secretary cum spokesperson Narendra Verma said the party has decided to totally focus in Meghalaya, which is facing the elections next year.
“We will be putting candidates in all 60 constituencies. There will be not less than 40 seats as in the last elections we fought in only 29,” Verma said.
The national secretary also announced that the NCP would not align with the ruling Congress in the upcoming the election.
Ironically, the NCP is supporting the ruling Congress till date, even as their state president Sanbor Shullai was shunted out of the Deputy Speakers post last year.
“We will not align with the Congress but we will contest the Assembly poll separately and decide our candidates well in advance,” he said.
According to him, the NCP would be an alternative for the people of Meghalaya in the upcoming Assembly election, and would try to contest in all the 60 Assembly seats.
Asked, the NCP leader lambasted the ruling Congress in Meghalaya for failing the people in the state who voted them to power in 29 out of 60 seats in the last elections.
“Meghalaya government could have performed better but they have not. Governance and development has not happened. People are disappointed and are looking for alternatives,” Verma said.
Reacting to a query that the NCP being a partner of the Congress is also likely to be affected by anti-incumbency, Verma however said, “We have supported the Congress only to ensure stability, but has never been part of the decision making process.”
The NCP leader also informed that the state level convention of the NCP will be held in July first week where former Ministers – Pawar and Patel – will address the convention and kick off the party’s preparation for the assembly elections early next year.
“We want to give a good government here. In the coming months, the NCP will gear up and there is good response from the people,” Verma said.
The NCP has two MLAs – Sanbor Shullai and Marthon Sangma in the House of 60.
A former Congress man and Independent MLA Saleng A Sangma has indicated to be joining the party soon.
“I will be formally joining the party soon,” Saleng, who was also felicitated by Verma, said, adding that ‘there is hope only in the NCP to perform well and give good governance in the state.’
On Saleng’s decision to become an associate member of the NCP, Verma claimed that a lot of people including sitting MLAs were also in touch with the NCP. “We have good response from the feelers we received,” he added.
There were allegations that the NCP state president and sitting MLA, Sanbor Shullai is likely to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and that Saleng may take over as the new president.
Denying this, Verma said that Shullai will remain in the party and will continue as state president.
