ASAK militants surrender

TURA, DEC 2: Three ASAK cadres today surrendered at Dadenggre in West Garo hills. The cadres are – Robinson R. Marak, 33, Bawen Marak, 27 and Betell Marak, 29. A police release said that the cadres were actively operating along Tikrikilla – Dadenggre area of West Garo hills. “The cadres have not laid down arms. However they confessed that the outfit has three of four weapons”, said GHP Raju inspector general of police (operations).

A teenager identified as Manseng A. Sangma, 15 also surrendered at Dadenggre, who claimed to be member of A’chik Matgrik Meghalaya Army (AMMA). “He has admitted to be involved in kidnapping and extortion in Damal Asim area. He also claimed that two of the members of the outfit were recently beaten by public and two weapons recovered”, Raju added.

Raju informed that two cadres of AMMA were caught by public yesterday at Dabigre village and handed over to police. “AMMA is a dacoit gang. They are involved in series of kidnappings and abduction cases in Daddengre area”, the IGP said.

At Kalchengpara, about 50 km from Tura, a public meeting was organised today by the West Garo Hills police team. The objective of the meeting was to elicit people’s participation and cooperation in crime prevention and detection.

Raju said that people’s participation in this exercise in the recent weeks has resulted in surrender of militants and dacoits before the police.-From Our Correspondent
