KHARKUTTA, DEC 2: The six kilometers stretch of road from Assam’s Rangjuli to Meghalaya’s Kharkutta in North Garo hills has become an eyesore for over 50,000 plus residents in both sides of the state, who have repeatedly sought intervention of Assam PWD authorities.

Kharkutta MLA Cherak W. Momin, who is camping in his constituency after November 25 army killing of civilian said, “I have personally written to Assam PWD minister on three consecutive times. However, there has been no response”.

As Assam PWD failed to respond to the call of Meghalaya, the Kharkutta MLA took the decision to repair the potholes. “We are currently filling the road with earth so that the bumps on the road can be covered. This will provide temporary relief but will hopefully be a start”, Momin added.

Kharkutta area of North Garo Hills is along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The sorry state of the road in the area has posed several challenges for the people along the border areas. Last year, a young mother lost their child, as they could not reach medical centre in time due to poor condition of the road.

The 6 km stretch has not been repaired for the last several years.-From Our Correspondent
