Ask to shift vehicle, police arrests doctor

Shillong, Sept 25: In a bizarre incident that smacks of police highhanded a doctor working in Chokpot Primary Health Centre was arrested, handcuffed and taken to a police station Tuesday just because he dared to ask the police to remove the police vehicle which was parked improperly inside the PHC compound.

The unfortunate victim of the police highhandedness Dr Walesa N Sangma was taken into custody by the police who handcuffs him and even made him to  walk right from the PHC premises to the Chockpot police station.

The bizarre incident immediately evoked sharp protest from doctors serving in the different health centers of the region and the state. As a result the doctors in the state  has decided to stage an indefinite cease work demanding the state government to immediately arrest the police  personnel involved in the act.

It is also learnt that police had gone to the PHC to get some of the ailing personnel treated.

South Garo hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Davis R Marak confimed the arrest of the doctor to reporters over the mobile but could not give details because of the bad mobile network.

The Meghalaya Medical Service Association (MMSA) has threatened to agitate strongly if the government doesn’t take action and order arrest of all the personnel involved in insulting and abusing a doctor.

The MMSA Garo hills Unit has called a general meeting Wednesday where it will take a decision to stage a three-day cease work. Similarly the MMSA Tura Unit has decided to conduct an inspection and inquiry into the Chokpot incident.

MMSA central body general secretary Dr A War informed that the executive committee will soon sit to discuss about the incident.

War informed Chokpot police not only mistreated the doctor but he was arrested without an FIR lodge against him.  He promise that the association will take serious cognizance and accordingly decide and stage an indefinite cease work to pressurize the government to act by arresting  and taking stern legal actions against the erring personnel.- By Our Reporter
