Months before election, MDP decides to contest 2013 polls

Shillong, Sept 26: After its election debacles in 2008, the Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP) resurfaced Wednesday with the party president Martle N Mukhim announcing the party decision to contest the ensuing 2013 assembly election. He said the decision to revive and contest the 2013 election is not his but that of his followers in hi constituency.

Mukhim  said “I was away from the political realm in the State for last few years but noticing the social and political situation while weighing our party’s ideology to work for the people, I went about consulting various people that led to consultative meetings and decided to contest from Mawkynrew constituency”.

Elaborating further on the sequence of events Mukhim said “On August 31 2012, we held a conference and subsequently revived the State executive committee where we decided not only to contest from Mawkynrew but participate actively and contest other constituencies”.

Answering to query on what led the MDP to lose and not win even a single seat despite fielding 18 candidates in 2008 election Mukhim said “I was a victim of political betrayal”.

Mukhim said in 2008 the party had done all the ground work for J U Nongrum, the then JHADC MDC and Metbah Lyngdoh from Mairang but both them had ditched him to join UDP at the last moment.

Martle N Mukhim lost to sitting UDP legislator Remington Pyngrope  by only 66 votes in 2008 election.- By Our Reporter
