Assam police release farmers

SHILLONG, JULY 12: The Assam police released the two farmers who were arrested from a paddy field in Nongdron, Langpih – a village under disputed Block I about 53 kilometers away from Nongstoin the district headquarter of West Khasi hills district on Thursday on bail.

The two farmers seventy-year old Shkendro Lyngdoh and sixty-year old Twendro Lyngdoh were working in their paddy field when they were surrounded by the Assam police and taken into custody last month. The two were arrested on suspicion for illegally felling trees.

Due to its nonchalant attitude towards the arrest of the two old farmers, the Meghalaya government has been criticized for failing to secure their release from the Assam government.

“The two were released yesterday after we move for their bail,” said Hasina Lyngdoh, a family member while addressing a press conference on Friday.

The duo was kept in the Assam police custody for nearly a month since the state government failed to take up the matter with the Assam government for their release.

The family of the two farmers had sought the help of the local MLA and an ngo leaders for their release after the district administration and police of West Khasi hills district failed to help them despite repeated requests.

“We had lodged a complaint with the police and district administration but sadly nothing was done to get them released.” Hasina Lyngdoh rued.

HANM Ri-Bhoi district president Kodius Thongni helped the family to get the detained farmers released.

Speaking to reporters the two farmers said that on the day when they were arrested they were working in the field.  They also said they were treated well by the Assam police.- By Our Reporter
