Petrol bombs hurled, RBYF gs arrested

SHILLONG, JULY 12: Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) Nongpoh unit general secretary Jognesh Nongrum was caught after he hurled a petrol bomb at a truck in Umdihar on Friday night. He was arrested after the police laid a trap.
Nongrum and his colleagues had put a log in the middle of a road to stop vehicles from moving during the last day of the two days night road blockade in Ri-Bhoi district to protest against the state government’s failure to meet their demand and reinstate the two casual employees of Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) in its Umsning office.
Ri Bhoi SP CVS Reddy told this website at around 12 midnight on Friday that Nongrum had threw the petrol bomb and disappeared. The petrol bomb, however, missed the truck. Police laid a trap and hid behind a bush and Nongrum came back, that is when he was arrested.
Earlier miscreants also hurled petrol bomb at police vehicles in Pahamrioh and Umling at around 10.30 pm and 11 pm respectively. However the petrol bombs missed the Bolero and Camper in which the police were travelling.
On Thursday- the first day of the two days night road blockade- miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at the truck in Umsning near the SBI office, pelted stones at an ambulance and security personnel on the first day of the two days night road blockade on Thursday called by the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF).
Though the petrol bomb missed the truck but it turned turtle and went down a deep gorge seriously injuring the driver and the handyman. Both of them were rushed to the Nongpoh Civil hospital for medical treatment.
A case has been registered against unknown persons under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act in Thursday incident.
The Ri- Bhoi district administration intensified police patrolling and provided protection to vehicles plying along the Guwahati Shillong national highway during the two-night-long road blockade.
Section 144 CrPC has been imposed in the district prohibiting any obstruction to vehicular movements in view of the two-night-long road. Security has also been beefed along the highway and patrolling has been intensified.
Reddy had informed that seven platoons of state police are manning the entire national highway to ensure that no untoward incident takes place during the night road blockade.
The RBYF is also demanding withdrawal of FIR against its members and also to stop the manhunt by the police.- By Our Reporter
