Attack on social activists: surrendered accused remanded to police custody

SHILLONG, DEC 27:  A lower court has remanded two persons involved in the November 8 – brutal attack on women’s rights activist Agnes Kharshiing and her aide Amita Sangma in East Jaintia Hills District to three days police custody.

The accused persons which include Nidamon Chullet and Cheerful Ryngkhlem were arrested and forwarded to court after they surrendered before the district police chief Sylvester Nongtyngnger recently.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Nongtyngnger said Chullet, who is  from Mynkrem, Shangpung village and also a leader of the ruling National People’s Party in the district, surrendered on December 25.

He however said Ryngkhlem, a resident of Wapung village has surrendered before the police on Wednesday afternoon.

He said both are wanted for their involvement in the November 8 lynching incident in which Agnes and Amita were severely injured.

The SP said Ryngkhlem have been forwarded to court and was remanded to three days police custody while Chullet will also be produced before the Court again tomorrow after he has served three days police custody.

Asked, Nongtyngnger however refused to disclose the place where Chullet have been hiding and only said he was in the state all this while. “Investigation is on into the case,” he said.

Stating that the number of arrest in the case has increased to 8 in this case, he however said efforts are on to arrest few more people involved in the brutal attack on the two women activists.

The Investigating Officer has submitted nine names to the Meghalaya High Court which is closely monitoring the case.

When asked, the SP informed that Hamlen Rymbai, who was arrested earlier, have been granted interim bail by the court recently. “This was after he (Rymbai) was referred for further medical treatment (to Vellore),” he said.

Meanwhile, the police are also on the lookout for a leader of the FKJGP Kynsai War, who is still on the run.  According to SP, raids have been conducted twice on the residence of War. Call details available with the police have alleged that War was in touch with Rymbai during the attack on the two women activists.

Earlier, Amita had written to Governor Tathagata Roy seeking arrest of Chullet who was the mastermind of the attack on the two women when they went about taking pictorial evidence of illegal mining and transportation of coal in the district.
