Bandh irresponsible: Govt

SHILLONG, SEPT 28:  The state government on Sunday called the total shutdown by the Hynniewtrep National Libertion Council (HNLC), especially at a time when the Puja celebrations have begun, as ill-timed and irresponsible.

HNLC announced a 24 hour total shutdown in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region from 6 pm of October 1 to 6 pm of October 2 to  protest against the recent killing of two civilians in Jaintia Hills and also to boycott Gandhi Jayanti.

The state government in a statement issued on Sunday said, “The call is irresponsible when the Puja celebrations have begun in the state.” It urged citizens to work towards peaceful solution of all issues and to respect the religious observance of the various communities inhabiting the state.

The state government calls upon citizens to honour the Father of the Nation by observing his birthday in celebrating the ‘Clean India Movement’ and in taking the common pledge to make Meghalaya and India clean.

It appeals to all citizens to take the pledge in their respective locations like District Headquarters, Block Headquarters, Community Halls, fields etc. in a united effort to keep the country clean, beautiful and healthy for all.

All citizens of Shillong, ngos and organisations pursuing the objective of having a clean and healthy environment have been invited to come to the Polo Grounds at 08:00 am on the October 2 and take the pledge for cleanliness which will be administered by the  Governor of Meghalaya, and together commit to make Meghalaya a model of cleanliness and revive the beauty of its capital and of the state as a whole.- By Our Reporter
