Strike suspension welcomed

SHILLONG, SEPT 28: The Meghalaya government has welcomed the suspension of the economic blockade called by the Movement for Indigenous People’s Rights and Livelihood – Meghalaya (MIPRL)

“We expect that all those concerned will be patient in awaiting long term solutions to the problems of traditional coal mining, which have been initiated by the Government of India,” the government statement issued on Sunday said.

However, the state government has also viewed with deep concern the law and order situation which arose in East Jaintia Hills because of the Economic Blockade called by the MIPRL.

“The unnecessary loss of two precious lives and injuries to many others has caused much anguish to the government,” the statement said.

Two civilians were shot dead during a firing incident causing injuries to many at Mookhep village in East Jaintia Hills District which took place during the hours of the economic strike called by the movement.

While swift action was taken in providing ex-gratia compensation to the bereaved families it has also taken the responsibility for treatment of those injured, the government stated.- By Our Reporter
