SHILLONG, AUG 14: The second day of the HNLC sponsored 48 hours bandh was incident free with business establishments, educational institutions remaining close with few vehicles plying on the roads.

Some local taxis, government and private vehicles were seen plying on the roads with some small shops in some of the localities belonging to tribal remaining open. However all the shops in major business hubs remained close.

Government offices functioned normally but with employees’ attendances varying in the six Khasi and Jaintia hills districts on the second day of the 48-hours HNLC bandh on Thursday.

East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang said that till evening no untoward incident relating to bandh was reported from any part of the district. He said, “ Till now I have not got any report of any incident taking place.”

The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) militant outfit had called for the 48 hours bandh in the Khasi and Jaintia hills districts to protest against the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban on rat-hole coal mining in Meghalaya.

The bandh on Independence Day was called by the outfit to protest against the policy of the Government of India in forcing the signing of the Instrument of Accession and annexed Agreement on August 17, 1948 at gunpoint.

According to political department official figure the attendance in government offices in East Khasi hills was around 65 percent, in West Khasi hills 80 percent, South West Khasi hills 65 percent, East Jaintia hills 30 percent, West Jaintia hills 84.75 percent and Ri Bhoi district 42 percent.

East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal informed that in his office the percentage of attendance was around 85 percent.

West Jaintia hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar said that while attendance in government offices were satisfactory but the business establishments in his district remain close. – By Our Reporter
