SHILLONG, AUG 14: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma said that there is a smart mind operating in creating disturbances in Garo hills by targeting banks and petrol pump employees which are crucial public sector even as he said that there is some formidable anti national force working to destablish the country through northeast by supplying guns and explosives.

Reacting to the killings and kidnappings that is taking place in Garo hills with the latest being the killing of a petrol pump workers and abduction of an SBI official that led to the indefinite banks and petrol pump strikes, Sangma said,  “There is a “criminal mind”, which is working to “paralyse” the economy of the state.”

Speaking to reporters after the meeting of the State Security Commission (SSC) on Thursday, Sangma however assured that the state government is committed to neutralize all criminal organizations. He said efforts of the police to displace militants from their earlier areas have paid dividends as their training camps have been completely dislocated.

Sangma was of the opinion that police actions have forced the militants to change their modus operandi that includes abductions and murder of innocent people so to put pressure on the government to withdraw security forces operation against them.

Sangma also said that intelligence inputs point to the huge amount of arms that are available in the north east region. He said, “Where is the arms coming from and whose job is it to take care of the International border.”

Sangma was of strong opinion that the north east states will have to work together along with the union government to stop inflow of arms into the region from across the border. He said if such inflows are stop, the criminal activities that are taking place in Garo hills can easily be curbed by the state government.- By Our Reporter
