Bandh peaceful in GH

TURA, AUG 19: The dawn to dusk dawn bandh sponsored by the Garo Students Union (GSU) passed of peacefully on Monday at the Dadenggre sub-division. The 5 am to 5 pm bandh was called to recall Albert G Momin as the area BDO  by transferring out the present BDO  Roy from Selsella. Apprehensions were in the air of trouble brewing out after the arrest and detention of the Selsella AYWO general secretary, but the GSU and other ngos supporting the bandh ensured that nothing untoward took place.

Roads wore deserted look as the response to the bandh was total. The GSU president north zone Rupa M Marak said, “We have had a successful bandh in the sub division to demand for the transfer of the incumbent BDO of Selsella. We want an MCS officer in his place as we believe development will be better under an MCS officer. The NH51 remained closed as we had a lot of people supporting our call from the region.”

Speaking on the arrest of the AYWO general secretary Hubert Marak, Rupa said, “If we understand the process correctly, Hubert was collecting money for his association of VECs to go to Shillong to ask as to why the money was not released for the VECs of the region. If that is extortion then we have no clue what is not. The allegation of disturbing of peace does not arise as we are protesting peacefully.”

Rupa continued by saying that if legislator Clement Marak thought that a peaceful agitation was intimidating, then why did he not file an FIR against us as we are leading the agitation?” – By Our Reporter
