Mission green launched on Sadbhavna Diwas

Chief_Minister_Dr._Mukul_Sangma_administering_the_pledge_on_the_occasion_of_Sadbhavana_Diwas_at_the_premises_of_the_Meghalaya_Main_Secretariat_Shillong_on_20.8 13SHILLONG,AUG 20: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma launched the “Mission Green- Youth for Energy Conservation” during the celebration of the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Diwas marking the 69th birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on Tuesdayorganized by the Meghalaya Non Conventional and Rural Energy Development Agency (MNREDA) at U Soso Tham Auditorium. The theme of the celebration this year is “Renewable Energy for a Brighter Future”.

The function was attended by Zenith Sangma, Meghalaya Minister for sports and youth affairs, BK Dev Varma, additional chief secretary in-charge power, J. Lyngdoh, commissioner and secretary and director MNREDA, teachers and students drawn from different schools of East Khasi hills district.

Paying tribute to the former prime minister, Sangma said that the celebration of Renewable Energy Day is a tribute to Rajiv Gandhi’s vision of taking the country forward through application of modern science and technology.

Sangma said that the growing concern of climate change and the state energy security has posed huge challenges before the policy makers and the government is exploring possibilities to develop Renewable Energy as an alternative source of energy. He said that to further strengthen the approach, under the Meghalaya Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Promotion Programme, Energy mission is among the nine missions indicated which will exclusively be designed to create appropriate interventions for building up sustainable energy development through active involvement of the community.

While launching the “Mission Green- Youth for Energy Conservation”, Sangma called upon the young particularly the students community to partner with the government in its endeavour to create awareness among the people about the effects of climate change and the need to adapt to such changes suitably. He further said that the launching of the mission would enable the students to partner with the government by being the ambassadors who will champion for a cleaner and safer environment. He also appealed to all to use renewable energy as far as possible thereby creating a clean environment and an economically effective society.

 Later Sangma and other dignitaries present handed over LED Solar Lanterns to students of different schools. It may be mentioned that Under Phase – I, LED Solar Lanterns will be distributed free of cost to 2424 students of Class X of different School under East Khasi hills district.

The day long programme includes essay, drawing, painting, slogan writing and model making competitions on Renewable Energy participated by the school students.

CONGRESS BHAVAN: In the Shillong Congress Bhavan, “Sadbhavna Diwas”, was also celebrated to pay tribute to the late prime minister. A simple but glittering function was organised which was attended by Congress minister and party functionaries.

Floral  tributes were paid to the Congress leader by party leaders and workers  as the late Congress leader played an important role in buildings modern India. Meghalaya social welfare minister and Congress working president Deborah C Marak remembered the leader for his various initiatives that took the country to new heights of development.

Marak said that the late prime minister through his dynamic personality brought India to the forefront of development and recalled that he was always keen to improve country’s relation with neighbouring countries.-By Our Reporter
