SHILLONG, SEPT 26: Hours before he submitted his resignation, the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member Ardent Basaiawmoit along with the Hima Mylliem conducted a survey of  the Sweeper Lane, Them Iew Mawlong and decided to submit a petition to the state government for relocating the Harijans residing in the area so that construction of a new market in the areas can be facilitated.

Basaiawmoit was accompanied by the Syiem of Hima Mylliem L Manik Syiem, KHADC chairperson Teilinia Thangkhiew, her deputy Pyniaid Sing Syiem and KHNAM MDC Adelberth Nongrum besides officials of the Hima.

“We have conducted a survey to the area since the council is proposing to construct a new market,” Basaiawmoit told reporters.  He said there has been an increase in the number of vendors and hawkers in Iewduh and its surrounding areas which in turn has caused a lot of inconveniences for the public due to congestion.

“The proposed construction of the new market is to accommodate all these vendors and hawkers,” Basaiawmoit said adding “It will not be proper for us to just relocate them from one place to another as we have to think about their well being as well by constructing a proper market for them.”

Basaiawmoit informed a joint petition by the KHADC and the Hima Mylliem would soon be submitted to the state government demanding immediate relocating of the inhabitants residing in the Sweeper Lane to pave way for the proposed project.

“Since the land belongs to the Hima Mylliem, we would demand immediate relocating of the inhabitants from the area,” Basaiawmoit said adding the government had already made arrangement for their relocation earlier.

Syiem of Hima Mylliem L Manik Syiem said some of these residents of the area have also availed land pattas from the Hima and some of them are just settled illegally.

Syiem informed that in recent years the Hima had also requested the KHADC not to issue any trade license to these residents without getting the NOC from the Hima Mylliem.- By Our Reporter
