SHILLONG, SEPT 26: The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC)on Friday demanded that the tate government institute a judicial enquiry by a sitting Meghalaya high court judge into the recent firing incident that led to the killing of two civilians at Mookhep village in East Jaintia Hills District.

“We demand the government to institute  a judicial enquiry by a sitting judge of the Meghalaya High Court to ensure that a free and fair enquiry is conducted into these happenings and the offenders should be arrested without loss of time and punished stringently through special courts set up for the purpose” MPHRC chairman Dino DG Dympep said in a statement issued on Friday.

Dympep said the MPHRC strongly condemns such alleged indiscriminate firing by the police personnel which have resulted in the unfortunate death of two persons – Derest Shangshai and Setlang Phawa and injuring severely many other civilians.

According to the MPHRC, such unfortunate incident clearly establishes that the police personnel had no justification whatsoever to kill or to cause injury to those innocents persons. “In other words, killing them was a clear act of murder and all the police personnel involved should be prosecuted for the same,” Dympep stated.

Dympep also felt that it is time that police should stop using live ammunition and use rubber pellets to control crowds without any loss of life as is the practice in most of the developed countries in the world.

Dympep also said the MPHRC unequivocally condemn the attack on the East Jaintia Hills SP, magistrates and other officers while performing their duties. He said there is also a need to properly assess the need and appropriateness of the entire situation that is aggravating the situation. – By Our Reporter
