BJP stir against maxicabs

SHILLONG, AUG 8: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State Youth Wing on Monday decided to hold agitation against the alleged illegal operation of the STPS buses and SSPTS maxicabs by avoiding paying taxes required by commercial vehicles.

Addressing pressmen on Monday, BJP-SYW Eugenstar Kurkalang said, “We have decided to hold peaceful agitation on August 11, as a mark of protest against this unreasonable practice by the state government.”

According to him, the STPS buses and SSPTS maxicabs though operating as commercial vehicles but as they are running under the registration of government vehicles (ML-01) and seems to have been exempted from paying the different taxes mandated as per the Motor Vehicle Act.

Terming such action as biasness on the part of the state government, Kurkalang said that the youth wing have received several complaints especially from taxis associations against the government’s alleged violation of MV Act.

He added that it is unfair for the government to exempt the STPS buses and SSPTS maxicabs from paying the different taxes including passenger, permit and others. “We demand the government to ensure that implementation of the Act should be equally applicable for all,” he said.-By Our Reporter
