Block Bangla SIM: India

SHILLONG, JAN 13: To stop the use of Bangladesh mobile service by militants operating in Meghalaya, Meghalaya government has requested Bangladesh authority to take measure to prevent its signal from spilling over to Indian Territory.

“We have requested the deputy commissioners of the respective bordering districts (Bangladesh) to have a meeting with the telecom operators having their mobile towers in the border areas to look into matter,” East Khasi hills deputy commissioner Sanjay Goyal told newsmen after the bilateral meeting between Meghalaya (India) and Bangladesh, which concluded on Tuesday.

According to him, the use of Bangladesh Sim-Cards on Indian Territory is a major concern.

Goyal said, “There are technologies which can reduce the strength of the signals or can refocus the signals on a certain side,” adding “So the idea was if they reduce the signal on the side of India, it will not be able to cover 300-400 meters. Unlike now, we have in certain cases; the signal can penetrate right up to 5-6 km also.”

Goyal further informed that the Bangladesh officials have agreed to take up the matter with their government and assured that they will definitely look into the issue.

When asked on the alleged use of Bangladesh gramin phones by security forces at the border inside Indian territory, Goyal said, “There are possibility of these thing happening but we need not go to the extent of jamming the network,” adding “Our point is that the other side can simply reduce the strength of their signal so that it is not covered in the Indian Territory.”

Stating that it is a slightly bigger issue, Goyal said, “The issue might relate to many international protocol also but we are not very sure because these are new things which have been coming up…” adding “But according to me, it is yes, you are encouraging into the what we called – air space, this is also a violation.” .

Goyal further stated that if these are block, the security forces at the border will work out their own way of communicating. “The point is when anything is easily available everybody would like to have. If you have the US Sim card available here and make a call at a US rate am sure you will use it. But tomorrow if you say am blocking it, you will make an ISD call only,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Goyak said the concern is India’s more than Bangladesh and therefore more proactive action must come from India’s side. “Let them reduce the strength of signal on Indian side and let it covers only up to their border and does not spill over to Indian side,” he reiterated while adding that our weakness on the part of the telecom strengthening in the border should not be taken advantage of by the other side that is the point.- By Our Reporter
