Border villagers threaten stir

SHILLONG, APR 12: Demanding setting up of more than five police outposts in the disputed Block I areas, the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) who had met Meghalaya home minister Roshan Wajri along with the villagers from disputed areas threatened to organize a ‘surprise protest march’ to the secretariat if government fails to meet their demands.

The demand for the police outposts came following alleged continued harassment committed by the Assam government against villagers residing in Block-I areas in Jaintia hills region recently.

A delegation of the HYNF and headmen from the different border villages apprised Warjri on Friday of the situation faced by the villagers of the border areas.

“We have demanded that the government must immediately set up the police out posts in the five villages under the disputed Block-I area to ensure safety and security of the villagers from being harassed by Assam,” HNYF Raliang circle president Donbok Dkhar said.

The five villages including Mukroh, Saba, Psiar, Khanduli and Umkyrpong, he said.

On April 8, officials of the Assam forest department came to Saba and Khatkasla and allegedly collected taxes from the villagers who are farmers, Dkhar informed adding that the Assam government has completed conducting a census survey of 15 households at Mukroh village.

On her part, Warjri has assured the delegation that she will be touring and inspecting the Block – I areas by next month soon after the current budget session is over. –By Our Reporter
