SHILLONG, OCT 8: Ngos in Garo hills on Thursday resolved to “boycott” the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls slated to be held on October 12.

The decision was taken after series of public meetings held against participation of non-tribal in the GHADC elections, conducted by the conglomeration of ngos in the five districts of Garo hills region.

“Each of the public meetings has unanimously resolved to protest, mourn and boycott the upcoming GHADC polls,” the leaders of the NGOs said in a statement on Thursday.

The  leaders said, “Therefore, it is our final appeal to all the tribal Garos to stand up for each other and display unity in rejecting the GHADC polls in its current form by boycotting the upcoming elections.”

Stating that the tribal of Garo Hills has for the first time in history united to protest the imperialist schemes of the non-tribals and pro-non-tribal politics, the leaders said, “Thus, we anticipate that no individual will betray this movement, despite their political or biological affiliations.”

According to the ngos, the period prior to the upcoming GHADC polls, the Garo community as a whole has been protesting against the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC polls, asserting that the GHADC should exclusively be relevant only to the indigenous tribal of Garo Hills; their protection of culture, customs & tradition.

“ However, till date, neither any political party, nor any public representative has served the purpose or displayed any interest in fulfilling the aspirations of the Garo sentiments, which is to express right over the GHADC,” the leader said.

The ngos protesting against participation of non-tribal in the GHADC elections include GSU, FKJGP, AYWO, ADE and FAF.- By Our Reporter
