BSF & BGB pays homage to 1971 Indo-Pak war heroes On Wednesday

SHILLONG, MAY 8: The Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) on Wednesday paid homage and remembered the BSF heroes of 1971 Indo-Pak War who laid down their lives fighting for the creation of a separate Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan.

The names of the Indian border guard martyrs are engraved in golden letters on the War Memorial, which stands bang on the Indo-Bangla international border.

A documentary is being made by BSF at the initiative of BD Sharma, IPS, addl DG (Eastern Command), which will keep the memories fresh and continue to inspire the generations to come in both the countries. The services of professionals from Kolkata were taken to shoot the documentary.

BSF director general DS Pathak and BGB major general Aziz Ahmed were present on the occasion to pay homage to the martyrs, whose supreme sacrifice denied the strategic control over the Dalu-Tura road in liberation war of Bangladesh.

After paying tribute and honour to the martyrs of Kilapara, Pathak said “This is really a special day in our endeavour to remember and honour the martyrs of Kilapara. Last year, we inaugurated the Martyrs Memorial and today we have again got together to offer our tributes to the heroic saga of sacrifice and courage and capture the same in the form of documentary, that will keep our memories ever fresh and continue to inspire the future generations in both the countries”.

BS Tyagi commandant (retd)of the then Coy Comdr of BOP Dalu and Mrs Kalita wife of late constable PC Kalita, who had laid down his life at Kilapara, also came to share their valuable feelings.

Officers of BGB at the level of Dy Directors General from Dhaka, region commanders, sector commanders, accompanied DG BGB also paid homage to the martyrs.

The scene of the fateful day of 25th May 1971 was recreated by BSF troops through a realistic demonstration, which was applauded by all the spectators.

To mark the occasion, some of the Bangladesh freedom gighters, Dr. Mehmud, the then sub sector Commander of Mymensingh sector of Mukti Bahini, his wife and two more freedom fighters who were injured during war were also present.
