Cabinet approves Bill

SHILLONG, MAY 15: The state Cabinet on Friday approved the draft Meghalaya State Agricultural Produce and Livestock, Marketing, Promotion and Facilitation Bill, 2020.

After the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the decision was taken after due consultation with all the three autonomous district councils (ADCs) in a meeting held on Thursday.

“The views and suggestions of all the three ADCs were taken note of and the cabinet has decided to approve the Bill,” he said.

Tynsong informed that the Bill seeks to amend the Meghalaya State Agricultural and Marketing Act, 1980.

He said livestock, fisheries and medicinal plants – which were not there earlier in the previous Act – will now be included in the proposed Bill.

The draft Bill will be placed for consideration in the upcoming reassembled budget session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to be held from May 20-22.

Earlier, Tynsong had also informed that the intention of the government is to have more regulated markets as at present the state has only two regulated markets at Mawiong, East Khasi Hills and Garobada, West Garo Hills.
