Cabinet approves renaming of a stadium after PA Sangma

SHILLONG, FEB 8: The NPP-led MDA governemnt has decided to renamed the Dikkibandi Stadium at Tura in West Garo Hills District after former veteran political leader (Late) Purno Agitok Sangma.

Purno, who was also a founder leader of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) had served as a former Tura member of parliament (MP) and was also a former chief minister of the state.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Conrad K Sangma here on Friday.

After the meeting held here on Friday, Home Minister James K Sangma told reporters that the Cabinet has approved the recommendations regarding the renaming of roads, villages and institutions made by the Meghalaya State Naming Authority Committee during its 24th meeting held on November last year.

Sangma said the Dikkibandi Stadium (which earlier known as MP stadium) and a junction leading to AMPT road in Tura have been renamed after PA Sangma.

Asked, the home minister said the name MP stadium was not official and it was in 2014, the government had renamed the stadium as Dikkibandi.

He added, today it was again renamed as PA Sangma stadium as there was a popular demand going to the fact that majority of the money spent on the construction of the stadium was initiated by PA Sangma during his tenure as Tura MP.

“Today the state government has decided to honor the contribution that he (PA Sangma) made towards the construction of that stadium,” he said.

Meanwhile, the road from Mawlai-Mawroh to Madan-Mawkhar under Mawlai constituency was also renamed as St Mother Teressa Road.

Similarly, two roads under Greater Laban area have also been renamed after two former legislators which include Howel Road will now be known as Thranghok J Rangad Road and Zikzak Road at Rilbong was renamed as Ardendu Chaudhuri.

The ABP Road Batti Bazar at Laban was also renamed as Roland Lyngdoh Road, Sylhetipara Road at Laban as Krepsing Swer Road and Jackson Trace Road at Lower Lumparing as Melington Kharkongor Road.

The village Kynshiraishan was renamed as Kynshi village.
