Cabinet firms up decision to introduce anti-graft law

SHILLONG, DEC 11: Following chief minister Mukul Sangma commitment Tuesday forenoon in the assembly that the new Lokayukta bill will be introduce during the ongoing winter session of the Meghalaya assembly, cabinet in the evening firm up his decision by deciding to place the bill which will cover chief minister and the lower rung employees in the anti-graft law.

The decision is significant as the anti-graft activists belonging to ngos have upped their demand for a strong anti-corruption law and repeal of the Lokayukta act 2002 by bringing about a stronger law that will cover even the chief minister. With assembly election just two months away, it appears that Sangma did not want to leave any room for its rival to attack the Congress party for developing cold feet to introduce the bill in the assembly for a stronger anti-graft law.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Sangma said, “The Lokayukta Bill will also cover the Chief Minister and lower rung employees.” He informed the cabinet minutely studied the details of the bill and found out that certain fine-tuning is needed.

Sangma claimed that the government wanted to make the anti-graft bill mush more focused to tackle corruption. He said the cabinet will again meet on Thursday to finalise the draft Lokayukta Bill before it is introduced in the assembly.

Asserting that the government is committed to addressing the issue of corruption, Sangma said, “We will introduce an effective Lokayukta which will address issues of corruption in a manner befitting to the emerging circumstances.” – By Our Reporter
