‘Examine report on Roberts’

SHILLONG, AUG 12: A day after allegation of anomalies were leveled against  Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital two top functionaries, the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Assembly (KJPA) directed its department to complete examining the managing committee’s report into the allegations within a month.

The direction was given by the Executive Committee (EC) of the KJPA after an emergency meeting was held on Wednesday following allegations of salary scam and termination of a  pregnant doctor brought to   light by a group of youths.

“The report has been submitted by the Managing Committee before the EC  and accordingly we have referred it to the department with a direction to complete examining the same within one month,” KJPA Senior Administrative secretary Rev NS Phawa told newsmen.

Earlier, the “youth of the church” had accused the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr David D Tariang and Administrative Officer KT Rynjah of inflating their own salaries without the consent and approval of KJPA, thereby violating the Memorandum of Association (MoA).

When asked, Rev Phawa said, “At the moment, the KJPA is not in a position to comment whether the allegations leveled against the officials of the hospital are true or not, till the time that the examination of the report is completed.”

According to him, the KJPA had in fact received a letter of complaint submitted by a group of six doctors from the hospital on April 14, seeking redressal to the various anomalies in the hospital even before the youths allegations.

Expressing unhappiness over the management of the hospital, the doctors in their complaint had raised concerns over the issue related to salary, treatment to fellow doctors, depriving of reimbursement and the manner in which doctors are being terminated.

Taking cognizance of this, he said, “The Assembly on May 4, had immediately directed the Managing Committee (which is entrusted to look into issues concerning the hospital) to inquire and clarify on the issues raised by the doctors.”

“However, the Managing Committee failed to submit the report and its reply on the matter on time, but was only able to place the same before the EC today,” Rev Phawa informed.

Earlier, the youths while alleging the anomalies also claimed that the KJPA had failed to address the issue even after requests were made for the past one and a half year.

Refuting this claim, Rev Phawa while admitting of receiving such letter from the youths said, “They had come to submit the letter only two weeks ago (on July 29) where they have given a week’s time (till August 5) to remove the MS and AO of the hospital. Therefore, it is misleading to say that the Assembly failed to look into the matter for the past one and a half year,” adding “They have also come here as social activists and not as they claimed that they are youths of the church.”

Stating that it is not a wrong to point out on the anomalies,  Rev Phawa however said that it should be done in a more responsible and constructive manner because to err is human and nobody is perfect.- By  Our Reporter
