Shillong, Nov 6: Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Vinod Rai said no organization or profession can be sustainable and successful in the long run, unless it is built on an “edifice of credibility” and “integrity.”
Addressing the XXth Convocation of the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) conferring degrees to more than 8000 students held at the campus Tuesday Rai was of the opinion that ethical management and leadership is the cornerstone for any successful organization.”
Underscoring the need to practice and promote ethical values in any profession, Rai said, “One has to set the tone and create a culture of honesty and integrity. Adherence to ethics and integrity needs to be ingrained in the subconscious and not compromised under any circumstances.”
According to Rai, unless we destroy “corruption” in high places, root out every trace of nepotism, love of power, profiteering, we will not be able to raise the standards of efficiency in administration as well as in the production and distribution of necessary goods of life.
Rai felt nobody should succumb to the temptation of short term gains as rapid growth without sound ethic is bound to falter in the long run.
Rai further emphasized that the only way to achieve excellence in the work culture is to love what you do and believe in your work. “He said, “The higher you rise, the higher you think.. If you think small then you remain small, but if you dare and dream big and work for realizing the big things of life then, in your endeavour to realize them, you grow big in the process.”
Revealing that India has the largest unemployable engineers and is far behind neighbouring China, Rai exhort the need to strive for excellence. “We need to walk that extra mile with clear vision and mission and must not shy away from excellence,” he added.
However on the other hand, Rai said “knowledge” is not static, it is a dynamic concept. “Therefore it is imperative for all of us to continue the process of learning and skill upgradation,” he exhorted while urging the students not to treat the degrees that are being conferred to them as an end to a journey.
Raid said, “Knowledge needs to be applied for realising the good of society and improving the well being of the citizens.”.
Pointing out that higher education is of vital importance as it is a powerful tool for building a knowledge based 21st century society, Rai said, “Existence of institutions or infrastructure alone will not be enough,” adding “We need to have a talent pool in the form of faculty to nurture the young minds and give them appropriate values of honesty and integrity along with the subject specific knowledge.”
The world is emerging from a severe economic stress and is resetting itself to face newer economic realities; Rai observed that young men and women graduating today are privileged to be part of this historic journey of India to emerge as a world power adding, “The youth will be shaping the future of India.”
Altogether 8035 students were conferred with the different degrees (Ph.d, MPhil, PG degrees, Bachelor’s degrees) at the convocation.
45 students from different departments were awarded with the gold medals for their excellence performance in this year examinations. Besides, special awards including President of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal was awarded to Justishna Bora of Biochemistry department, PC LAlthansiami (MA) of Political Science department was awarded with the Srimati Sarada Khrishna Alyer Memorial Award, while, David Rahavei (BA)of political science was awarded with the U Tirot Singh Memorial prize, Bashongdor Nongbri (M.Sc) of Zoology with Professor MK Khare Memorial Prize, Sosangzenla Longkumer (MA) of Sociology with Professor MN Karna Young Sociologist Prize and Dolcinia Wajri (BSc) of Zoology with Rajendra Kumar Sunheri Devi Jain Charitable Endowment Award.-By Our Reporter
