Centre grants ex-gratia

SHILLONG, MAR 8: The NDA government at the Centre has sanctioned ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the victims killed and those injured in the recent tragic road mishap in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district.

Replying to a Zero Hour notice in the Assembly during the ongoing Budget Session here on Wednesday, Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh informed that the Centre, under the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), has released ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims who were killed and Rs 50,000 each to those who were injured.

A total of 18 persons died while several were critically injured when an over-speeding truck ferrying them overturned at Nongspung village in the district. They were on their way to attend a church service at Nonglang village.

Moreover, Lyngdoh informed that the state government has decided to extend financial assistance of Rs 50,000 and Rs 10,000 to the families of the victims killed and those who were injured, respectively, in the incident.

At the same time, he said the driver of the ill-fated truck has been booked and will be arrested after he is discharged from the hospital.
