SHILLONG, OCT 19:  Meghalaya deputy chief minister-in-charge of education- RC Laloo is blissfully unaware of the oldest school that was only last year upgraded to  secondary level and had been established before the Independence and running without teachers at the secondary level.

This came to light when an FKJGP delegation met Laloo to take up the case of Government Secondary School at Mawsynram in East Khasi hills on Monday.

“We shocked when Laloo told us that he doesn’t know anything about this school, which is fully run by the government and was established in 1946,” FKJGP Mawsynram Circle Banshai Marbaniang told reporters.

The FKJGP delegation met Laloo to demand that the government immediately address the problems faced by the Government Secondary School at Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills District. Only last year  the school was upgraded to a secondary level with admission up to class X.

Unfortunately, even after more than one year  the state government has failed to appoint teachers for the secondary section affecting the students studying in this school.

What is even more ironic is that the students of this school had to appear as private candidates in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination conducted by the MBOSE.

“We condemned the minister concerned for not knowing the existence of this school, despite the fact that this school has been upgraded to secondary level,” Marbaniang said.

Stating that education is the backbone for growth and development, FKJGP (central body) organizing secretary Marbud Dkhar said, “It is time the state government come out of that Shillong-centric attitude and concentrate more on promoting education in the rural areas too.”

Lambasted Laloo for giving appointment to the FKJGP delegation after over two months wait he said, “Laloo is behaving like a minister from another state.”

FKJGP is also demanding the government immediate appoint teachers for the secondary section

The FKJGP Mawsynram Circle president informed that the personal interview for the post of teachers had already been conducted last year but  the results is still yet to be declared.

As of now, the students studying at the secondary level are at the mercy of the lower primary teachers, who have volunteers to help them with their lessons.

While demanding for immediate regularization of the school as per the Recongition of Secondary and Higher Secondary School Rules 2012 of Meghalaya Schools Education Act 1981, Marbaniang said, “This will ensure that the students gets recognition while appearing in the board exams.”

The FKJGP  also wants the government to immediately construct separate toilets for male and female students as well as for the teachers. Marbaniang added the FKJGP has demanded immediate construction, repairing and maintenance of staff quarters of the school.

Laloo assured the delegation that he would soon direct his officials to conduct an inspection to the school.- By Our Reporter
