SHILLONG, JUNE 30: Special Director General of Police (DGP- special branch) SK Jain will take additional charge as the Meghalaya acting DGP after the union government apparently rejected the state government request for extension of the outgoing DGP Rajiv Mehta who retired on Thursday.

A state government notification late Thursday evening said, “Jain will look after the office of the DGP in addition to discharging his duty as special DGP -SB until further orders.”

The state government had written to the union home ministry requesting for Mehta’s extension earlier but the letter gathered dust in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Apparently the BJP led NDA government at the centre is in no mood to oblige the Congress led state government’s request for the state’s police chief extension.

Sources in the secretariat justified the state government’s decision to request for Mehta’s extension stating that under his command the state police did a commendable job by neutralizing the dreaded Garo hills’ based militant outfit GNLA and also the spate of surrender by top leaders of the outfit.

But the union government apparently did not think much of Mehta’s achievement as it decided to sit on the letter of the state government even after chief minister Mukul Sangma reportedly tried to push through the state government request with the ministry of home affairs.

A 1981 IPS batch Mehta had taken over as the Meghalaya DGP on February last year.

Jain, who belongs to the 1984 batch, however will be retiring four months from now therefore making him ineligible for the post of the DGP as the Meghalaya Police Act clearly states that the one who will be appointed as DGP must have at minimum one year service before his retirement.

Therefore the onus of choosing a regular DGP from the empanelled list of IPS officer will not fall on the State Security Commission which is likely to meet once chief minister Mukul Sangma returns to the state capital.-By Our Reporter
