Chandigre rural resort opened for tourists

RESORTSHILLONG, JAN, 10: The second Rural Tourism Resort Project was inaugurated at a place near Tura called Chandigre, which is nestled amid orange orchards, tea and coffee plantations.

Chandigre is a rural resort and close to the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, Hoolock Gibbon Reserve at Selbagre and the Rombagre falls, which is a fish sanctuary. The resort has two Nok Achiks (typical house of the Garos), Nok Pante (dormitory-cum-training
centre for boys), Chu Nok (brewery), Chidik (water tank) and Nok Kidik ( toilets).

The tourism department has provided capacity building training to the villagers to run the resort. The department had also taken help of the department of horticulture to carryout aesthetic beautification of the resort.

Inaugurating the project on Wednesday, chief minister Mukul Sangma said since 80 per cent of the state’s people reside in villages it was necessary to create innovative and viable opportunities of livelihood for them to check unwarranted migration to urban centres.

Stating that the rural resort was an example of partnership between the government and the community, he urged the villagers to make use of the facility on a sustainable basis. Chandigre, he said, has also been identified as an apiculture centre under the flagship programme of the government’s Integrated Basin Development and Livelihood Programme.

The chief minister handed over the keys of the resort to the president of Chandigre  Rural Tourism Society in the presence of P K Sangma, CEM, GHADC, Billykid A Sangma, former MLA, and Noverfield R Marak, director of the tourism department, among others.

Earlier in the morning, the chief minister inaugurated the Nongalbibra Police Station at  Jadigittim in South Garo Hills. He stressed on the need for the police to maintain law and order, especially in a coal belt area like Nongalbibra. Stating that the number of police stations in the state was not adequate, he informed that 34 new outposts would  be set up in the near future. (By Our Reporter)
