SHILLONG, AUG 5: Over hundreds of illegal hawkers who were operating in Iewduh were evicted during the routine checking drive against illegal trade carried out by the enforcement wing of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday.

“We have evicted over hundred of illegal hawkers who are operating their businesses in the market after they failed to obtain the trading license from the council,” KHADC executive member in-charge Trade Latiplang Kharkongor said.

The checking drive by at least 40 personnel of the council’s enforcement wing this time was conducted under tight security.

District police and the CRPF personnel were seen accompanying the enforcement wing staffs of the district council during the checking to ensure it was violent free and that nobody obstructs the checking.

The security came after the recent attacked on the council’s staffs by a mob when they were carrying out similar checking drive against illegal trade by non-indigenous people at Iewduh market.

During the drive, the enforcement staffs also seized goods and products belonging to the hawkers without trading license.

“We have seized around five trucks of illegal goods and products of the hawkers who failed to obtain trading license from the council,” Kharkongor said. He reiterated that the KHADC would continue to ensure that there is no illegal trading in and around its jurisdiction.

“We will continue our drive against illegal trade operating within the council’s jurisdiction,” Kharkongor said.- By Our Reporter
