Chef arrested in vendor-murder case

SHILLONG, OCT 6: A chef of a city restaurant was arrested for his involvement in the brutal murder of a 36-year-old woman street food vendor at Keating Road here, which took place about a month ago.

Sarmaston D Sangma (22), who is presently working as a chef in Step-In restaurant, Lachumiere was arrested for committing the murder of Anjana Sinha, a street food vendor at Khyndailad area, on September 3, SP (City) Vivek Syiem said here on Friday.

The arrest of Sangma, a resident of Dholaigaon village under Dangar Out-post Mawsynram, was made after the mobile phone of the deceased was recovered from one Jacky S Marak (21) of Athiabari, West Khasi Hills, who was picked up and arrested on Thursday.

The case was treated as a Special Report (SR) case and was closely supervised. The investigation was assisted by the Special Cell, East Khasi Hills as there was no eye witness or clue to the case.

“The motive of the murder was to commit robbery. He (Sangma) robbed her mobile and cash of about Rs 2,000. The knife used to commit the murder has been recovered from his erstwhile work place at Golden Gate Restaurant, Nongmynsong,” Syiem said.

According to the SP, Marak is also involved in several thefts including one in his erstwhile workplace Golden Gate restaurant.

“He will be produced before the Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Shillong tomorrow and Police remand will be prayed for to complete the investigation for which early submission of chargesheet will be made,” he added.

It may be mentioned here, Anjana Sinha of Macabbe Road, Polo had gone to keep her cooking table near the Power house on the rear road leading to Lady Keane College, Shillong while her husband Suresh Sinha who was not well waited for her at Khyndailad.

After 30 minutes of her not returning, Suresh went looking for his wife near the Power house where her table was kept, where he found her shawl and slipper on the ground.

On further searching for her, he found the body of his wife 30-40 feet on the ground close to the rear gate leading to Lady Keane College. Her throat was found slit open with several cut injuries on her body, Syiem said.

She was immediately rushed to Civil Hospital, Shillong by 108 Ambulance but was declared brought dead.

An FIR was submitted by the husband at Sadar Police Station.
