SHILLONG, JUNE 26: Meghalaya labour minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said according to the survey conducted by Tata Institute of Social Sciences there are about 343 child labourers but the district administration survey has put the figure at 222 in the coal mining areas of the state.
Lyngdoh told reporters during media conference on Wednesday, “We have to verify the reports and we will be engaging either IIM or NEHU to conduct the survey and verify the figures.”
VV Giri National Labour Institute expert Dr Onkar Sharma who also was part of the press conference said that the central government must take action against the coal mines that flout labour rules and regulations and employs children.
Giri said child labour is a burning issue that confront states but rued that the child labour law in the country does not put 100 percent prohibition on child labours as the law provides prohibits 80 occupations.
Giri also praised Meghalaya labour department as it has framed 12 schemes for labourers of the state. He said, “I am happy and I will ask other states to follow Meghalaya in this regard.” – By Our Reporter
