Close down distilleries

SHILLONG, APR 17: The Civil Society Women’s Organization (CSWO) on Sunday demanded closure of local distilleries set up right in the centre of a village causing danger to human life.

According to the organization, there are local distilleries detected at Shilliangdongki village falling under Sohiong Constituency in East Khasi Hills District.

“These distilleries should be closed down immediately and shifted far from these habitations,” CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing said in a statement on Sunday.

Terming the distilleries as a death trap and a crime, Kharshiing said, “The authorities are also urged to check into this so that no untoward incident occurs which can harm children.”

“It was reported to the CSWO by children that just a few months back a toddler fell into this swamp as he thought it was solid ground and ran towards it and fell inside and was fortunately found by his elder brother,” she informed.

She said that one of the distillery which is the biggest and belongs to one Pherklat Jana,  is just near the  Catholic St Marys Church and near the School Lamjingshai UP School.

Just ahead there are three more distilleries besides a stream that has been providing drinking water and water for washing clothes and utensils for the local residents and the spill from these distilleries has gathered forming a dirty swamp, Kharshiing added.-By Our Reporter
