SHILLONG, MAR 13: Tears rolled down the cheeks of chief minister Mukul Sangma as he spoke about the services of his parents who were schoolteachers during the ongoing budget session on Friday.
Talking about the problems faced by teachers, Sangma during his reply on the debate of Governor’s address recalled the services of his father, who was a teacher of a school near Ampati in South Garo hills.
Sangma told the assembly, “From the school where my parents had taught, two of the students are present in this house – Zenith Sangma and Winnerson D. Sangma. He informed even former Lok Sabha -Speaker Purno A. Sangma was his father’s student.
Zenith, is also the younger brother of the chief minister, represents Rangsakona constituency in West Garo hills.
Soon after saying this, Sangma choked and broke down. He paused for a glass of water taking out his handkerchief to wipe out the tears from his eyes. He, however, regained his composure after a couple of minutes and continued to share the problems faced by the teachers because in the delay to release their salaries.
Lamenting the presence of too many categories of schools and teachers in the state, Sangma said that he was already on the job in ‘correcting’ the system, which he said was wrongly adopted. He also informed that new polytechnics would be set up in the district headquarters, which do not have them yet even as he was all for construction of residential schools to arrest school dropouts.- By Our Reporter
