Mock bomb drill spread panic in city

SHILLONG, MAR 13:  Panic gripped those who were present in Khyndailad on Friday evening when the Meghalaya police bomb disposal squad suddenly appeared and started to cordon off a suitcase placed at the bus stop near the rotary. Ambulance and fire tenders also rushed to the spot to aid the bomb squad.

Bomb squad personnel wearing black bomb squad uniform led by Meghalaya bomb squad additional SP Bibhuti Purkayastha descended in the centre of Khyndailad and cordoned off the suitcase.

Panic and curiosity immediately spread and hundreds of onlookers gathered even as the police cordoned off the area. Fire tenders and ambulance also came rushing to the stop.

It later transpired that the entire incident was just a drill by the bomb squad to see the preparedness of all those who gets engaged during such an incident.

Meghalaya bomb squad additional SP Bibhuti Purkayastha told this website, “ It was a drill to see the response of all those who gets involved during such time including the public.” According to him such drills had already been conducted in Tura thrice.

Purkayastha also informed that such drills will be carried out in different parts of the city where the CCTV has been installed. He said the response from the state fire service and the ambulance has been excellent as both came to the spot on time. He also said that the crowd was also well disciplined even though it did spread panic.

The state police have installed CCTVs in different locations in Shillong and Tura to help curb crimes in the city. Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma had recently inaugurated the CCTVs in the Sardar police station recently.

Purkayastha said that such drill is necessary to keep everyone on their toes and also to see the response. In the next ten days such drill is likely to be conducted in different parts of the city.- By Our Reporter
