SHILLONG, NOV 30: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will lead a 10-member delegation to New Delhi on December 4, for attending the upcoming election of the new president of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Speaking to media persons at the sideline of a cabinet meeting held here, Sangma said the party’s national vice president Rahul Gandhi will be the nominee for the top post, which is currently held by his mother Sonia Gandhi.
The Congress has recently announced that filing of nomination will be held on December 4, voting on December 16 and counting of votes on December 19.
Sangma said that state leadership is looking forward for Rahul to become the next president of the Congress.
“I personally on behalf of the party from this part of the country is waiting with great joy to see him as Congress president,” he said.
Stating great things are expected to happen not just for the nation but particularly for the North East region as a whole, Sangma said, “…because of the fact that Rahul have very deep understanding about the complexity of this region.”
According to him, the election is a long awaited development and it is being looked as another moment that will unfold and in continuation of the history that was seen in the past.
“Other than the leaders from the Nehru family I have not seen that understanding of our way of life, our vibrant culture and the tribal ethos, the kind of connect they have with us, the creation of the state, the special treatment for tribal states – all these things are linked with the understanding of the NE and their unquestionable love for the people of the region,” Sangma stated.
It may be mentioned here, the party’s organisational election has to be completed before December 31.
The Election Commission has given the party the last extension for completing the internal poll process by the end of this year.
