SHILLONG, MAY 21: The National People’s Party (NPP) has demanded immediate resignation of the chief minister Mukul Sangma and home minister Roshan Warjri over the custodial death of a twenty year boy who is allegedly involved in the illegal detention of twelve girls who were also tortured.

NPP also demanded immediate removal of West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh as the party alleged he has a role in the death of Balson Marak.

NPP spokesman James K Sangma said that the chief minister and home minister must take moral responsibility for the  incident and accordingly resign.

Balsan Marak died in the Tura Civil hospital while in judicial custody on Tuesday.

Sangma said on Wednesday, “We demand the immediate removal of the SP for his role in the death of Balsan Marak.” Condemning the incident, he said, the police department, which is there to serve and protect the lives of citizens, have ironically become “life-takers”.

Twenty years old Balsan Marak who was arrested along with four other men in the case of keeping twelve women captive and torturing them died on Tuesday at Tura civil hospital. He was on a 14 day judicial custody along with the four men arrested on May 13.

Marak was admitted in the hospital on Monday evening for fever, body ache, pain in the elbow and right ear infection.

According to Sangma many such cases have been taking place in Meghalaya and this he felt this is because of lack of sensitization amongst police personnel.

Sangma also said it is also unfortunate that while such an incident which is of serious nature has occurred, chief minister Mukul Sangma is camping in Delhi. He said, “This shows his (Mukul) complete lack of concern for the people of the state.”

The NPP has also demand adequate compensation to the family of the victim. – By Our Reporter
