Ultras exploiting grievances’ to lure youths

SHILLONG, MAY 21: Militants in north eastern region and Meghalaya are exploiting the region’s grievances to lure the youths into militancy even as Meghalaya deputy chief minister RC Laloo said that there is a rise in insurgency activities in Meghalaya.

Addressing the “Anti-Terrorism Day” on Wednesday at the main secretariat, Laloo said, “Insurgent activities, especially in states like Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and also Meghalaya are increasing even as the union government has been fighting insurgency in the North East for nearly five decades.”

Also home minister Roshan Warjri, PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, state chief secretary WMS Pariat, Director General of Police (DGP) PJP Hanaman besides other top government officials also attended the function.

Admitting that the north eastern region has many grievances, Laloo was of the opinion that the militants are exploiting these grievances to lure the youth into their fold. He said, “Terrorists mostly recruit younger people in their group as it is easy to brainwash them.”

Laloo said that Meghalaya too has its own share of violence and threat to the state’s security perpetrated by banned militant outfits. He said, “Many precious lives have been lost, people are living under the shadow of fear due to threats of being kidnapped or killed by the militants and terrorists.”

Laloo informed that because of the increase militant activities trade, commerce and the economic development are being adversely affected and the common people are the worst sufferers.

Urging the people to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence, Laloo said the anti-terrorism day is observed to promote peace and harmony in the nation and to inform the people of the evil effects of terrorism. He said it is also a day observed to wean away the people, especially the youth from the cult of terrorism and violence by highlighting the sufferings of the common people and the adverse affect it is having on the country.

Stating that the anti-terrorism day also coincides with the death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi, former prime minister of India who died at the hands of terrorist in 1991, Laloo said terrorism continues to inflict pain and suffering on people all over the world and fighting this scourge is the interest of all nations. He said fighting terrorists is also in the agenda of the United Nations for decades.

Stating that terrorism is a world-wide problem, Laloo said by now, governments throughout the world are realizing that terrorism is a serious threat which needs to be dealt with because the terrorists believe in the power of bombs and guns over dialogue.”

During the function, Laloo also administered the pledge of solidarity to fight terrorism along with the rest of the world.- By Our Reporter
